Comin around the mountain

I have a cover, proofs of the paperback are on the way, FREEFALL is for sale on Amazon and Barnes & Noble as an e-book for $2.99.
I’m pretty happy with the end result. What I set out to do was create a story that had some thrills and straight-forward adventure, dealing with emotions of loss and redemption. The real adventure has been the production of the book: learning tactics, weapons, e-book design, print book layout, collaborating on cover art, setting up federal and state tax ID’s… The whole she-bang.
I even have an official business name now, Bard’s Tale Press, LLC. How cool is that?
Very soon I will post more information about the novel’s completion. At the moment I’m taking a mental break, watching movies and TV in the late hours that, for four months, were set aside for writing.
Cheers, I hope you’re discovering all that you love in life,
D R

What do you Love?

To start with, these are just observations, not necessarily unique or life altering.

There have been many people and events in my life that I have cherished. I think I’m lucky that way.
Not to say there haven’t been struggles, but honestly, what do we really have time for? I wake up early every morning and get ready for work. After copious amounts of coffee I get a feel for the day and roll along, doing my job.

There won’t be any legendary ballads about me righting the world’s wrongs from my cubicle, but I do slay a dragon every now and then, so “I’ve got that going for me, which is nice.”

Then comes the hard part, leaving all the grown-up nonsense behind and being a great Daddy and Husband for my family at home. Not an easy task. I often ask myself why it can be hard to engage with the people you love the most. Well, relationships aren’t all full of snuggles and smiles. There are quite a few interjections of ‘put that down’ or ‘not in your mouth’ or ‘why can’t I go to the bathroom in peace?’ At this very moment we’re going through a round reminiscent of Mansbach’s Go the F**k to Sleep.

Kick it all to the curb, I say. Half full? Half empty? Hell, my cup is overflowing. Thank God for my health and the presence of family and friends.

After the day is put to bed, I start up the computer, cue up Pandora and my manuscript in order to knock out 1,000 more words, hopefully. This is the fourth month in my life that I have given myself over to something I cannot get enough of. I found it, writing, creating, giving life to characters and events that live within me.

And you know what? The rest of life is that much brighter! Even though I only sleep around five hours a day and am generally exhausted, I couldn’t be much happier.

Back to the moral of the story. Is there something you love or know you would love but have always held outside your grasp for fear of failure or condescension? Forget about it. You may think you’ve been balancing life according to what other’s need from you, but that is absolutely not a balance. Fill your own bucket, and you will have more left over for others.

Trust in your friends and family to support you. That’s what you picked them for in the first place right? I can’t be thankful enough for those who have supported me in recent months.

I’m not overly religious, but I must say, God is great. There just may be a plan for everyone, and if you feel that tug, go with it.

If you feel an emptiness, fill it.

That’s your destiny calling. Is your destiny a great one? Darn right it is. I am positive that what you can do – after you embrace your destiny – has an amazing ripple effect on those around you.

Imagine the waves we could make together.

Chapter Excerpt

Chapter 27 excerpt

Chapter 27 finds Cullen out of his element and struggling with the expectations of others.

He meets two new characters, one a very serious weapons expert and the other a rather strange individual.

Kickstarter Launch

I’m excited to introduce the Kickstarter Project for my novel, FREEFALL.
$5-$75 contributions receive e-book copies to a signed paperback and even naming or characterization rights.
So, if you like thriller / adventure novels with a touch of the supernatural, head on over to FREEFALL and make an investment.

E-book Conversion process and settings

Calibre Settings for E-book
I kind of stumbled on the Calibre e-book conversion and creation software and worked through some trial and error. From what I had been reading, there is a lot of error to formatting. After a bit of tweaking, I have been quite impressed with Calibre’s ease of use. I tested the MOBI files, made for Kindle, on my Kindle and was happy with the results. What you are left with in the end is a file that can be uploaded to Amazon for Kindle publishing. Don’t wait! Get your creations out for the world to read.

Kickstarter Approval

Yeah! I have Kickstarter approval. Now I just have to fill out the project and record a video that describes the project. So far I have Friday, July 15th set as the project completion date.

Kickstarter campaign

This morning I filed a proposal for a Kickstarter campaign and truly hope it is approved and becomes successful.
I had a positive experience sponsoring E H Jones debut novel, The Door to Canellin, through http://www.kickstarter.com and plan to take the same approach. $5 to $10 sponsors receive an ebook copy and acknowledgment; $20 to $25 for the ebook, acknowledgment, and paperback; $50 receives the previous rewards plus the naming of specific secondary characters; $75 includes the books, and I will work in up to 3 or 4 sponsors into the novel.

Good weekend

I think I’ve written nearly six chapters in the last week. Since meeting with Popos Tactical Supply to iron out combat and weapons details, I’ve really been excited to charge ahead. Tonight I will dig further into chapter 21. Some of Cullen’s questions are answered but more mysteries are presented.

Cleared the foothills

So, let’s say this is my personal Mount Everest.  I doubt I could scale the mountain but feared the attempt of completing a novel just as much.  It is actually kind of exhausting.  I’m tackling plot points I’ve had for years and find that once I put them in front of me, they can be surmounted.  I think I have cleared the foothills, setting up the emotional framework of the novel, and look forward to crafting a white-knuckled thrill ride.  😉  That would be nice, wouldn’t it.

Welcome to SanfordBooks

Hop on board and take a publishing journey with me.

Much of this will echo my Facebook page, D R Sanford.

Several stories have rumbled in my head for years, but the indie publishing world was rather unfriendly and costly.

Thank you Amazon, for popularizing epub books and revolutionizing publishing.

Please click on the FREEFALL Teaser post to read the first 4 chapters of my debut novel.  I welcome comments of all kinds
